Demonstrations, meetings, and growing up

One of the things I love about New York City, is the people. One of the things I hate about New York City, is the people. Somedays the endless crowds of (over-the-top) personalities is just too much. Like today, when I had to squeeze my way through a labor strike with thousands of people to get to school. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for speaking up, (especially under the current circumstance), but shutting down an entire district because of it – is very overwhelming for people trying to get from A to B.

Now that I got to blow off some steam, let me confirm that things are very good these days. Amongst other things, I had an exciting meeting today that ‘ll tell you more about if it pans out – I’m a true believer in Jinxing; some things just won’t come true if you say them out loud. Thinking it will come true, however, is very important. Other than that I’m working my way through my last semester and exploring opportunities for when I actually graduate  – one of the most stressful things I’ve ever done. Job? Where? What continent? Masters? Or should I work a couple of years first? Trainee? Or maybe just a summer position, and then move in the fall? These are all questions that continuously run through my head. I’m hoping the obvious solution just pops into my mind one of these days.

Shadow Sunglasses In Black And Havana Acetate With Brown Shaded Lenses

When I got home this evening, I was thrilled to see a FedEx package lying on the salon table. I opened the box, and there they were, my new sunnies from Céline. I’ve been looking for a pair like these since I lost my square Saint Laurent shades a couple of years back. They’re casual, cool, and will go great with any outfit. And, of course, they protect my eyes to the outmost satisfaction.  What’s not to love?

New York Fashion Week

SAM_4320 kopi.jpg

… has officially begun! After two morning lectures at Pace, I ordered an Uber and rushed to Chelsea studios at Pier 59. Feeling as fresh as I could after a long (and hot day) I found my seat and got ready for the show. I love the pre-show vibe. Everyone is dressed up, photographers are scavenger hunting for good outfits, and the room is filled with excitement and anticipation. When people are seated, usually 20 minutes late, the lights dim, the audience hushes, and the only sound are the click’s coming from all the cameras. The music starts and the models showcase the pieces. Instantly, an undeniable magic captivates everyone in the room.

SAM_4321 kopi.jpg

Even though I’m not working any shows this year, I’m lucky enough to attend a few. My first show for the week was Fashion Palette – Australian Swim/ S/S 2017. Great show with some great, mostly basic, designs. We’ll definitely see a lot of swimsuits, camisole dresses and bright colors next spring.

Business and pleasure

thumb_IMG_9003_1024.jpg

This weekend Amfi Arendal (the local mall) threw a summer party for all the employees. After I closed the shop, I threw on some makeup, a jumpsuit and some heels, before the other girls came. Happy workers, great colleagues, good food and great wine pretty much sums up the night. How was your weekend?

Off-the-shoulder

From catwalk to sidewalk, off-the-shoulder is one of the hottest trends this summer. It’s a versatile silhouette that works just as well for work, as for a night out. Personally, I’m loving this Bardot inspired look and have purchased a couple of tops of the wardrobe classic. My favorite? This white dream from Club Monaco.

Vacation

SAM_4136.jpg

Sorry for my absence, but I’ve been coping with an inhumane jetlag the past week. Where am I?  Home in Arendal, a little gem on the Norwegian south coast. Fresh air, silence, friends and family – it’s the perfect way to recharge and prepare for a new semester… And to earn money. City life ain’t cheap.

How are you spending your summer? Xx Hanna

Spread a little love

Happy Valentines! Have a great day with the people you love. ♡

Somehow, someway, this weekend disappeared before I even realized it had started – time flies when you’re having fun, that’s for sure. Since I took both Friday and Saturday off, today is spent catching up on school and work. I have so many projects going on, and even though it’s a lot of work, I’m very excited. I’m one of those people who gets more energy by having a hectic schedule. Get up, and get it done.

Other than that, it’s freezing outside. Negative 18 Celsius is not my cup of tea and thus leaving the apartment is the last thing on my mind. I guess that’s the beauty of paying rent in NYC; you don’t feel bad for staying inside an entire day…

Chan(n)el your inner peace

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

For the first time in years, I didn’t have any specific items on my wish list, yet, somehow, I got exactly what I wanted. My family and friends knows me well, that’s for sure. One of the items I unwrapped last night was this book of Chanel, collections and creations. In addition to the stories behind their iconic symbols, it’s studded with images, photographs and drawings that gives us a better understanding of both Coco and the iconic house. My heart literally skipped when I skimmed through it. (I could tell it on my new Garmin watch..) I guess passion for fashion just got a whole new denotation…

Other than that, I have to admit; life is pretty ok when you’re in your PJ’s till late afternoon… However, the clock has passed three and its time to put on the masque and find and outfit. Family dinner and a girls’ night out is on the agenda. Maybe I’ll pop by with an outfit. If I find something to wear, that is.

Every December, the city of New York turns into a winter wonderland – a Christmas paradise with decorations in every possible way, shape and form. Buildings are wrapped in lights and bows, Christmas trees are scattered all around and every single store makes an effort to put on their best displays – the most extravagant one can be found at Bergdorf Goodman.

I don’t know how, but every year the iconic department store manage to outdo themselves. This year they teamed up with Swarovski and created the display “Brilliant”- captivating and creative with countless sparkles that lit up 57th street and 5th avenue. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Psst. I recommend watching the movie “Spread my ashes at Bergdorf”…

Luxury Vs Budget

luxury vs budget

I’ve been crushing on these beauties from Louboutin since I saw Gigi Hadid and Jlo wearing them last year, and although it may be tempting to buy a pair of shoes instead of paying rent, it’s not really an option. Not a smart one that is. Luckily, I recently found these look-a-likes from Missguided – they truly are the next best thing; chic, cheap and comfy. What more can a girl ask for?

Holiday lips

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

As I’ve mentioned earlier, a red lip is a great trick to make any outfit pop, especially during the holiday season. As the make-up junkie I am, I have several different shades of red, but right know this liquid lipstick from Beauty Bakerie is my go-to. It doesn’t stain, smudge of wear off – it stays until you remove it! Looking fab whilst eating dinner and sipping wine just got a whole lot easier…

Tip: Remove it with an oil-based make up remover

Black friday

TODAYS HAUL FROM ZARA

Black Friday

THERE’S A SALE! A couple of years ago, I used to be one of those impulse shoppers who bought everything that looked cute, cool and unique. Quantity over quality was my motto, and I loved having a broad selection in my wardrobe. However, as I grew older and started to have those “I-have-nothing-to-wear” meltdowns, I realized that sequin dresses and patterned skirts, are destined for one-time use. That colorful dress that looked gorgeous at last years Christmas party, doesn’t necessarily look that great when grabbing a drink at the local bar. Luckily, my attitude changed and I started to understand the value of good basics…

That being said, what haven’t changed for the better, is my budget. When your credit card won’t go along with your style; there is only one thing to do – fake it. Find a thing in-between Net-a-Porter and Forever 21 – stores like Zara and COS for example. Another thing to look for is sales. Great sales that is. Not those crappy end-of-the-year-leftover-sales where a flowery dress in XL is your best bet. In my experience, sales with a genuine selection are usually found on special days, like today, Black Friday. Since this is the biggest sales day in the US, I saw this as a great opportunity (excuse) for some post midterms, pre exams treats. In fear of being blinded by the 30% off tag, I spent 3 hours online, considering every item that went into the cart and ended up with some great, black basics. I can’t wait to wear the chain bag (whilst I’m saving up for my Chanel) and the black pony hair skirt…

And in case any of you wondered; Material motivation works.

Happy Thanksgiving

First and foremost, Happy Thanksgiving! Here’s a peek of todays dressy casual thanksgiving look. It’s finally cold enough (15 Celsius..) to wear a coat! This one from Zara is an old favorite – I love the faux fur.

Earlier today Maria and I went to see the Christmas Spectacular by the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. The show has been running every christmas for over 80 years, so as the musical enthusiast I am, I had high expectations. However, to my surprise, it exceeded every single one. It was   mind-blowing. So good, in fact, that it deserves its own post which I’ll show you tomorrow. Right now, I have to get ready for tonight’s dinner; I’m looking forward to a night filled with great food and amazing people!

Lastly, since this is the day of thanks, I thought it would be appropriate to finish of with a sentence of gratitude. I’m beyond grateful for my life, and everyone who is in it. I’m grateful for every opportunity I get, and everything life throws at me; the good and the bad. I’m one lucky girl.

What lifts you?

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I’m the kind of person who considers street art the most beautiful kind of art there is; It’s a true, raw expression of passion and creativity. It’s art without boundaries and limitations. Even though the above piece by Kelsey Montague isn’t the most provocative, socially critical piece, she encourages people to contemplate an important question; What lifts you? What inspires you to get up in the morning? To pursue the day?

As human beings, I think it’s essential for us to have something to strive for. Dreams and goals that makes us look at life from a positive perspective; looking forward to tomorrow. To what comes next. What’s great about this, is that there is no unambiguous answer; no right or wrongs. It’s solely a matter of personal preferences. Some people may draw inspiration and happiness from their everyday routines; their workout or a good cup of coffee. Others may find inspiration from a character they admire; maybe a compassionate, empathic friend? A hard worker? A celebrity?

Personally, I draw inspiration from my own goals. I’m a dreamer out of dimensions, and consequently, I have goals to match; Goals that are a couple of years ahead. Right know, my primary goal is to finish my bachelor’s degree and then maybe an MBA. Simultaneously, I wish to start my career by pursuing some of the opportunities in this city. Luckily, it looks like my schedule for the spring semester will give me some time to intern; I can’t wait! I love to work, especially in the fantastic industry of fashion.

So why am I writing this? Well, there are two reasons. Firstly, It’s because I believe everyone should have something that lifts them. Inspires them to be the best they can be. Secondly, it’s because I’m currently studying for two exams, and I’m exhausted. However, having my goals in the back of my mind, I’m inspired to do my best.

I’m not a big fan of quotes, on the contrary I often find them mushy and apathetic. Nevertheless, I must admit, I liked the quote used in the context of this campaign,“Your wings already exist, all you have to do is fly”

So, what lifts you?

Wearing my new shirt from BALMAIN X H&M, skirt and boots from Zara and my favourite bag from Gucci. I simply love 70’s fashion and all it’s glamour! No jacket necessary – it’s still summer and 20 celsius over here.

Living in New York, one often forget to do the things people travel here to see, the touristy things. Even though few of these attractions make up the real New York, it is fun to visit them once in a while. Especially to get some cool pictures – Brooklyn Bridge together with the Island of Manhattan, is a pretty cool backdrop..

Anyhow, how’s your weekend going? So far, mine has been relaxing, which is exactly what I needed. My schedule has been beyond hectic the past few weeks, so the weekends are spent to unwind; Just doing whatever comes to mind. Waking up without the monstrous alarm, enjoying breakfast, go shopping at 5th, work out or hang out with friends. Today we woke up feeling a bit adventurous, so we ended up walking over to Brooklyn, enjoyed the view from DUMBO, and had dinner at SHAKE SHACK. (The equivalent to California’s In-and-Out). By the time we got home, day had suddenly turned to night, and we decided that a girls-night-in was more tempting than hitting the clubs.

At the moment, we’re watching Magic Mike XXL whilst consuming heavy loads of wine, popcorn and chocolate. In other words, I should put the Mac away…. Either way, have a great night, and I’ll write you tomorrow!

10 things that happen once you move to New York

  • You learn that stepping out of your front door almost guarantees you will spend at least $10 that day. Somehow, somewhere, you will spend it
  • You will learn accept the fact that you pay $1400 for a single room, realising that every movie you’ve ever seen from NYC is unrealistic bullshit; There is no way Ms. Carrie Bradshaw had the money to buy her own apartment…
  • In fact, you’ll appreciate any apartment that doesn’t contain; cockroaches, holes in the walls or a carpeted floor.
  • You will become disturbingly used to all sorts of craziness; a woman reading the Bible a the top of her lungs whilst the amateur dancers are putting on a show in your subway cart? Good morning to you too!
  • You are certain that everyone who smiles at you on the Subway are either crazy or, well, crazy.
  • You become surprisingly good at small-talk, seeing that you always meet new people.
  • Slowly but surely, you develop an aversion to every “tourist spot”. Times Square is a true nightmare.
  • You work 12 hour days without earning a dime – but you get to work with the best in the business, so you don’t care at all.
  • You suddenly become addicted to caffeine, so much in fact, that your local Starbucks remembers your order. This city never sleeps , neither do you.
  •  Weekdays and weekdays are one and the same. Tuesday is the new Friday and Friday is the new Sunday.

It’s actually part of the reason why I’m creating this blog. Secondly I’m creating this website to give my friends and family a sneekpeak of my life across the Atlantic; It’s an easy and fun way to update everyone at once.

Well, this was a quick intro, but most of you do probably know me personally. The rest; well, we will get acquainted over time; I promise you lots of good content! Other than that: feel free to ask questions!
